  8.           ** IMPORTANT VIPER VLB SOFTWARE INSTALLATION NOTES **

  11. 1.      DO NOT INSTALL THE VIPER VLB WINDOWS 3.1 DRIVERS INTO YOUR WINDOWS
  12.         DIRECTORY. DUPLICATE FILES NAMES EXIST!!
  13.  
  14. 2.      It is best to use the VPRMODE.EXE utility to properly configure
  15.         the Viper VLB for your monitor BEFORE using Windows 3.1 or AutoCAD.
  16.  
  17.    !!!  BEFORE USING THE VIPER VLB WINDOWS 3.1 OR AUTOCAD DRIVERS, USE  !!!
  18.    !!!  GO.EXE TO INSTALL THE VIPER VLB UTILITIES, AND USE VPRMODE.EXE  !!!
  19.    !!!  TO PROPERLY CONFIGURE THE VIPER VLB FOR YOUR MONITOR            !!!

  22.    ** IMPORTANT WINDOWS 3.1 DRIVER INSTALLATION/CONFIGURATION NOTES **
  23.  
  24. 1.      Start by running the GO utility from the floppy disk.  If this
  25.         is your initial installation of the Viper utilities or if the system
  26.         finds an old version of the Viper.ini file, you will be prompted
  27.         to enter a path for the new Viper utilities.  The default is:
  28.         C:\VIPER.
  29.  
  30. 2.      Once this procedure is complete, you can select the Windows 3.1
  31.         option.  The GO utility will then copy all the Windows files to
  32.         your hard drive.
  33.  
  34. 3.      When GO has finished copying the files, you will be prompted
  35.         for the location of your Windows sub-directory.  The GO utility
  36.         will then modify the [MMCPL] section of your Control.ini file with
  37.         the line:  "TurboWin=<Path of Viper Windows files>\TURBOWIN.DLL".
  38.  
  39. 4.      Now, enter Windows using the standard VGA driver supplied by
  40.         Microsoft.  The Diamond Viper icon will now appear in the Control
  41.         Panel and allow you to change resolutions, colors, and fonts.

  90. VPRMODE.EXE     command line and menu driven mode and monitor setting
  91.                 utility.  Use VPRMODE.EXE to configure the Viper VLB
  92.                 for your particular monitor, to change the VIPER VLB
  93.                 memory address, to select a text display mode, and to
  94.                 run Viper VLB diagnostics.
  95.                 VPRMODE saves monitor timing information to the
  96.                 VIPER.INI file.
  97.  
  98.                 NOTES:  1. use VPRMODE ? for command line option list.
  99.  
  100.                         2. the VPRMODE monitor configuration save screen
  101.                            may be displayed after running some of the
  102.                            VPRMODE commands.  If this happens, select
  103.                            ENTER to save. The screen will not appear again.
  104.  
  105.                         3. KNOW YOUR MONITOR! Please refer to your monitor
  106.                            manual or manufacturer for correct monitor timing
  107.                            information before running VPRMODE, and before
  108.                            contacting Diamond for technical assistance. If
  109.                            you do not have this information, DIAMOND WILL
  110.                            NOT BE ABLE TO HELP YOU with VPRMODE problems.
  111.  
  112.                         4. "SVESA" command line option loads a special VESA BIOS
  113.                            TSR.  The only difference between this special VESA
  114.                            BIOS TSR and the normal VESA BIOS TSR (loaded by
  115.                            "VESA" command line option) is the scan line length
  116.                            (the difference between the addresses of two
  117.                            vertically neighboring pixels) in VESA mode 101h
  118.                            (640x480 256 color).  The normal VESA BIOS TSR sets
  119.                            the scan line length to 640 bytes (mode default) in
  120.                            VESA mode 101h, but the special VESA BIOS sets the
  121.                            scan line length to 1024 bytes in VESA mode 101h.
  122.                            Loading this special VESA BIOS fixes the screen
  123.                            scrambled and distorted problem for those
  124.                            applications (such as DataShop v1.0, Space Shuttle
  125.                            and Dracula Unleashed) which change the scan line
  126.                            length from 640 bytes to 1024 bytes by programming
  127.                            CRTC Row Offset register (direct I/O with CTRC ports)
  128.                            themselves in VESA mode 101h.  This option is not
  129.                            supported in 1MB Viper board due to the hardware
  130.                            (Weitek Power 9000) limitation.
  131.  
  132.                         5. In OS/2 environment, the following command line
  133.                            options should be used to fix the screen scrambled
  134.                            and distorted problem for different Viper boards:
  135.                            5.a "MEMC0" : forces Viper board to memory
  136.                                          configuration type 0.  Used for 1MB
  137.                                          Viper board with PCB rev. B1 and later
  138.                            5.b "MEMC1" : forces Viper board to memory
  139.                                          configuration type 1.  Used for 1MB
  140.                                          Viper board with PCB rev. Ax
  141.                            5.c "MEMC2" : forces Viper board to memory
  142.                                          configuration type 2.  Used for all
  143.                                          2MB Viper boards
  144.  
  145. VIP.EXE         utility which will display or write to a file important
  146.                 system configuration information which can be used as
  147.                 an aid in trouble-shooting. Type VIP to display to screen,
  148.                 and VIP <filename> to save to a file.
  149.  
  150.                 NOTES:  1. the VPRMODE save configuration screen may be
  151.                            displayed after running VIP.  If this happens,
  152.                            select Enter to save.  The screen will not
  153.                            appear again.
  154.  
  155. VDIAG.EXE       diagnotic utility which will display color test patterns
  156.                 in each resolution supported.
  157.  
  158.                 NOTES:  1. to test extended modes, load the VESA BIOS
  159.                            extentions before running VDIAG.  This can
  160.                            be done by typing  VPRMODE VESA at the command
  161.                            prompt.
  162.  
  163. CHKPATH.EXE     utility which checks the PATH environment variable for the
  164.                 specified string.  Is used in the AUTOEXEC.BAT file with
  165.                 the VIPERPATH statement.
  166.  
  167. VIPER.INI       this file is used to store the monitor and configuration
  168.                 information for the Viper VLB, and is updated each
  169.                 time you choose to Save Configuration from the VPRMODE.EXE
  170.                 program.  Drivers find the location of the VIPER.INI file
  171.                 by checking the VIPERPATH environment variable.
  172.  
  173. VIPERPATH       an environment variable which is used by device drivers
  174.                 (Windows 3.1, AutoCAD) to locate the VIPER.INI file.
  175.                 This variable is set by the DOS SET command, and is
  176.                 automatically appended to your AUTOEXEC.BAT file during
  177.                 Viper VLB Utility installation.

  182.                    THE VIPER.INI FILE AND THE VIPERPATH STATEMENT ARE
  183.                    NEEDED FOR PROPER USE OF THE VIPER VLB WINDOWS AND
  184.                    AUTOCAD DRIVERS!  DO NOT REMOVE THEM FROM YOUR SYSTEM.
